New and only here! - Part 3 of Tim Boyd's 1960's Street Roadster How-To

On page 26 of the December issue of Scale Auto, I mentioned that I might make a few further modifcations to the '32 Ford version of the two NHRA Street Roadsters that I built for the October and December 2010 issues of SA.

I completed the model last winter and submitted the article at that time.  Subsequently, over spring and summer, I slowly added several of the following changes or additions.

First, the zoomie-style headers were replaced with long-tube headers with collectors.  These are more prototypical for drag engines with multiple carbs or fuel injection.  I looked through many kits trying to find the right design with the proper spacing for FE Ford engines, without success.  Finally I took the through-the-fenderwall headers from the JoHan '64 Dodge Super Stock, slightly bent the headers to match the FE ports, then spent the better part of a day cleaning up these parts (removal of parting lines, etc.).  They aren't exactly right for this application, but are pretty close.

Second, I added wheelie bars.  At the build date of this type of car in its 1/1 scale version, the more sophisticated wheelie bars we are used now were not used on this type of car.  Instead, they were just very basic designs, not too robust I might add, and often feature larger wheels than the funny-car style wheelie bars of the era.  I ended up finding these units in the AMT 1967/68 (and I believe, 1969) annual kits of the Ford Falcon.  A similar design could be kitbashed from some tubing and the TV Camera wheel casters in the AMT/Ertl Parts Pack kit of the late 1990's.

Then I replaced the two smaller nerf-style push bars with a single, gasser style hollow-tube push bar, which came (if I recall correctly) from the Revell '50 Austin gasser kit.  Finally, I kitbashed a parachute and parachute holder, largely based on leftover parts from an AMT Ohio George '33 Willys kit.

These changes add to the period authenticity of the model and provide a slightly different appearance to the project.  They are seen here for the first time, in the following sets of photos (3 in this post, 3 in the next post).

And, if you haven't already done so, check out James2's outstanding build of his version of the '29 A Ford Street Roadster, later in this section of the Forum, or just at the following link

Thanks for looking....TIM
