Olds 442 Grill Work Planned

This last week, I decided to make a tribute to a friend who past away this year. He owned a 1970 Olds 442 W-30. Since the 442 model was reviewed last month, I decided to buy the kit.

Now that I have the kit, I realize that I need to make some drastic modifications to the grill. The '72 grill is mesh, while the '70 grill has 8 thin vertical openings on either side of the 442 hood-piece. It looks like I will need to work the center section of the model grill into the hood to make the 442 hood-piece. After removing the center section, I will need to make the modifications to the grill itself.

How should I proceed with this build? Should I look into sculpting the grill from scratch? Since the model just came out, I haven't found any photo-etch modifications. This will be my first attempt at a 1:1 build (lots of NICE photos from 2009 Hot Rod Power Tour). This is also the first model that I will attempt to go out of the box.
