Lacquer clear coat question

I've understood that there is a time limit between your last color lacquer coat and when you can apply a clear coat.  If you wait too long, it won't attach properly.  This actually happened to me years ago, and the clear coat cracked up like a dry lake bed.  I'm getting back into clear coats now, but sometimes rainy weather comes and I can't use lacquers because they can fog up in high humidity. So, my question is: how long can you wait before adding clear coat(s) to your last color coat? I know you can't give an exact answer, I'm just looking for a general guideline.  Thanks
