You would have thought that, by now, coverage of Lady Gaga's VMA meat dress had reached its expiration date ... sort of like the 50 pounds of steak that designer Franc Fernandez originally used to make the garment.
But, you'd be wrong. You see, with Halloween right around the corner, one New York City eatery is making headlines with their last-minute costume suggestion: A re-creation of Gaga's VMA garb, in all its sirloin-y splendor. The only catch? You've got to have deep pockets to afford it.
Yes, for only $100,000, the owners of New York's Old Homestead Steakhouse — appropriately located, as the Daily News points out, in the Big Apple's Meatpacking District — will make you your very own meat dress, complete with rib-eye leggings, Kobe beef boots and a necklace made of marrow bones.
The dress weighs a hefty 85 pounds and was created by Old Homestead owner Marc Sherry in response to Gaga's VMA outfit, which he deemed "very tacky" since it was made out of meager bits of meat. The restaurant's version, he points out, features only USDA Prime cuts of beef.
"I wanted it not to be a cheap skirt steak," he told the Daily News. "I wanted it to be a cut above."
And while the $100,000 price tag may seem a bit stiff, it does come with a designer goody bag filled with filet mignon, chocolate sauce, Kobe burgers and candy corn. Plus, as Sherry pointed out, there are added bonuses to wearing 85 pounds of beef.
"Wear it for an hour, have fun with it," he suggested. "Then you might have enough meat for six months for your freezer ... so that the $100,000 is not that expensive."
And, much like Gaga's meat dress, early reviews of the Old Homestead gown were also mixed: Mery Lopez, a waitress at the 142-year-old steakhouse who modeled the getup for the Daily News, described it as "heavy and greasy and gross," adding, "it is what it is — but I like it."
